If you are wearing clear aligners to straighten your smile, you are not alone. Many of our patients in Oak Harbor, Washington have successfully used the Invisalign® clear aligner system to align their healthy smiles.

Dr. Michael Lemme is pleased to offer this alignment system for our patients who straighter teeth without wearing braces with noticeable brackets and wires.

But if you are going to wear aligners 22 hours a day for months, you will want to care for them to maintain their integrity. Let’s go over how to care for your clear aligners to ensure their clarity as you wear them.

–Rinse: After you take your aligners out, rinse them thoroughly with cold water to remove bacteria accumulation and saliva buildup before you put them back in.

–Temperature: Caution, water temperature is important. Never clean your aligners with hot water as it can warp them and affect their integrity. This also means no running them through the dishwasher, no matter how tempting that may be.

–Hygiene: After you take the aligners out to grab a snack or eat a meal, take the time to brush and floss your teeth carefully. You want to remove food particles and oral debris which can lead to bacterial growth and tooth decay.

–Cleaning solution: You can safely clean your aligners with antibacterial soap, just rinse them thoroughly to remove any lingering soapy residue. No cleaning your aligners with toothpaste as it can scratch the plastic and make the aligners more noticeable while wearing them.

–Sanitation: Sanitizing your aligners with mouthwash might be a great way to remove germs, mouthwashes containing green or blue coloring may tint your aligners resulting in the alteration of their clear color. You can, however, safely soak them in colorless denture or retainer cleaner to avoid discoloring them
